Woman tells court: Accused forced me to perform sexual acts
Acomplainant has told court that she was forced to perform sexual acts on the accused.
This was heard during the trial of a former National Federation Party provisional candidate charged with 11 counts of sexually-related offences. The trial started at the High Court in Suva on Monday.
The 66-year-old man is charged with four counts of rape and seven counts of sexual assault.
The accused appeared before the presiding trial Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.
It is alleged that the man raped his 54-year-old sister-in-law in Suva on June 28, last year.
It is alleged the man approached the woman and asked if he could spend the night at her house because he was too tired after a wedding and could not go back home. The man allegedly started knocking on the woman’s bedroom door in the middle of the night and then forcefully got into the room.
He then allegedly raped the woman. The woman managed to free herself and locked the man in the bathroom and sought help from a friend who then informed the Police. State prosecution is represented by Swastika Sharma from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The accused is represented by lawyers Devanesh Sharma and his associate Sharoneel Deo.
In court on Monday, the complainant gave evidence as the prosecution’s first witness.
The complainant told the court that she was 54 years old and stayed at home, living with her daughter in Suva.
She also told the court that she was a mother of three children and her husband died in 2011. The complainant told the court that the accused had told her that he would be travelling to Suva to attend a wedding with his family. She told the court that on June 27, 2018, she was at her daughter’s house when she had a missed call from the accused at about 11am. When she saw the missed call, she called him back.
She also said that on the day of the alleged incident, she was alone at home when the accused went to her house.
In court yesterday, the complainant narrated the alleged incident and of how it took place in her son’s bedroom. She told the court that the accused had forced her and pushed her to perform sexual acts on her.
She also told the court that she was scared because the accused threatened to kill her if she raise an alarm.
The complainant also said that the accused had told her that he had done the same with other women.
She told the court that she did not give any form of consent to the accused to perform sexual acts.
The trial continues before Justice Rajasinghe today.
