INDONESIANS MARK INDEPENDENCE DAY
‘We recall the struggles of our forefathers when we were colonised by the Dutch for 150 years. Our founding fathers pushed for independence and then on August 17, 1945, we became an independent nation.’
The Indonesian community celebrated its 74th Independence Day anniversary with a flag raising ceremony at the ambassador’s residence yesterday. Ambassador RM Benyamin Scott Carnadi said it was a blessing from God that Indonesians residing in Suva were able to gather and celebrate an important date for their homeland.
“We recall the struggles of our forefathers when we were colonised by the Dutch for 150 years. Our founding fathers pushed for independence and then on August 17, 1945, we became an independent nation,” the ambassador said.
“When we had the flag hoisting this morning, some were in tears because we are reminded of the unity and diversity of Indonesia.”
Pinkan Tulung, who was part of the ceremony, said Fiji held a special place in her heart as her husband passed away earlier this year.
Ms Tulung has been in the country for five months and works for the embassy. Her children attend school in Suva.
Fiji will be her home for three years before she and her children return to Indonesia. “For me I am far away from my home. My father always said wherever you go, always have God and Indonesia in your mind and heart and that is what I have always been doing and now I’m
teaching my children about Indonesia and Fiji’s diversity,” she said
“With today’s celebration, I am reminded about the importance of conserving our culture and the culture of Fiji.”
