Hundreds of people living in an informal settlement outside Suva City are known to be risking their lives. They are at risk from the high voltage power lines, said to be carrying 132,000 volts of electricity, that run over the settlement. BTL has been told that if one wire snaps and falls on the houses, then there might be a huge disaster as hundreds of lives could be lost. It is said that evacuation notices had been served by one authority to the residents over the years but they still remain there. The residents go to another authority with their notices and the result is that they are still staying in the settlement. While shelter is important for people, safety is paramount, thus the need for some urgent solutions for the residents of the settlement.
