Lautoka to host Youth Day
Government now focused on youths’ holistic development: Maritino Nemani.
Acelebration to commemorate International Youth Day will be held in Lautoka tomorrow.
The event, which is officially recognised on August 12, is the day set aside globally under the umbrella of the United Nations to commemorate young people’s achievements and set visions and goals for them to achieve.
Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports Maritino Nemani said the theme for this year’s celebration ‘Transforming Education’ brings into focus efforts to make education more significant for all youths.
“It also highlights the global vision and part of the country’s five and 20-year National Development Plans (NDP) to make education
more relevant, equitable and inclusive for all youth,” Mr Nemani said.
Celebration in the country started with the ministry’s partners the UNDP ‘Youth Fest SDG+ Event’ and a ‘Cultural Night’ for youths, which was held at the University of the South Pacific.
“Our partnership with our stakeholders carries an important aspect of our service delivery to our youths and we plan to continue this to ensure education progress and innovation for our youths,” he said.
Mr Nemani also said that with the high population of youths in the country, the Government was now focused on their holistic development and this was reflected in the programmes in place, focusing on youth development and entrepreneurship.
“This Government has placed a lot of importance on the empowerment of our youths through incentives such as the scholarship and loans programmes, the young entrepreneurship scheme and the various mobile and specific skills programmes within the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” Mr Nemani said.
“The Lautoka event is to celebrate and recognise our youth population. Our youths have done a lot and we have put up a programme to bring them together and to commemorate this important day.” The programme will start with a march, led by the National Youth Band from Shirley Park, with Lautoka-based Government departments present at Churchill Park to promote their programmes.
