At 15 years old, AnnMary Raduva has become the first Fijian to receive international recognition through the International Eco Hero Award for Young Environmentalists.

The award was launched in 2007 by Action For Nature (AFN), a United States-based non-profit oraganisation.

It recognises and rewards young people who are taking action to solve the world’s tough environmental problems. AnnMary was given an Honourable Mention for her work in environment conservation.

“My first reaction when I found out was an emotional one,” the Adi Cakobau School student said. “I thought of my late grandfather who taught me about our spiritual gift to protect God’s creation, and I know he is smiling from Heaven. “This recognition has given me the urgency to work harder,” she said. “I am humbled and grateful that our collective efforts as young eco

champs are recognised internationally.

“And of course, it comes with more responsibilities and I am grateful for all the support and empowerment I receive especially from the people who come to support me in my mangrove planting initiatives and coastal clean ups.”

She has encouraged other children and youths to come forward and be the agents of change in their communities.

“Don’t be afraid to make a difference,” she said.

“I have been mocked, compared to other international young activists and my credibility and motive has been questioned because of my age and the ‘real’ issues I advocate about. But we cannot let that stop us.

“My generation is cleaning up a mess that we didn’t create and I hope government leaders pay a little bit more attention and respect when we talk about these issues,” AnnMary said.
