Elderly woman, 2 men charged with two counts of rape
Two men and an elderly woman charged with two counts of rape will have their trial at the High Court, Labasa in November.
The alleged incident took place in January 2010 when the elderly woman allegedly aided and abetted the rape of her granddaughter who was eight months pregnant in
order to terminate the pregnancy.
A trial in the case had started with the victim giving evidence on Monday. However, the state prosecution had asked the court if the charges could be amended. The amended charges were read to the three accused in Hindi. The three accused said they understood the charges and pleaded not guilty.
The elderly man and woman in this case are represented by different lawyers from the Legal Aid Commission while the third accused has private counsel.
All parties have agreed to have the trial from November 19. Magistrate Cama Tuberi said it was the only available date in his diary as all dates for this year had been taken up.
The prosecution informed the court that they would be presenting two witnesses in the trial.
