JetSet Club Growing Rugby In Nadi
JetSet Junior Rugby Club aim to provide young boys and girls the opportunity to enhance their skills in a game they are passionate about.
Club chairperson Inise Mucunabitu said the club was committed to growing the game in the community with the support of Nadi Rugby and Fiji Rugby Union’s ‘Get Into Rugby’ programme.
It was started in October, last year following the Western Primary Schools Rugby competition where some parents saw there was a need for their children to learn and
play the sport.
“Our first clinic in December 2018 saw more than 90 participants from 3 to 18years attending a full day clinic,” she said. “This was in conjunction with the “Get Into Rugby” programme which is part of the World Rugby strategy to grow the game globally and to encourage players of all ages to Try, Play and Stay in Rugby.
“We have then been conducting fortnightly clinics since January. Apart from the clinics, the club have been fortunate to be given the opportunity by Nadi Rugby to play in the curtain-raisers in Skipper Cup Premiership games at Prince Charles Park.”
The club now has over 70 members and some of the boys were selected to represent Nadi in the Western Kaji Rugby Tournament on July 16-17 and Vodafone Primary Schools Kaji Rugby Tournament in Sigatoka on August 13-16.
In partnership with FRU, the club held a three days holiday programme with the aim to provide intensive skills development programme – offering coaching and skills development for children between the ages of 5 – 16 years.
“The programme also included members of the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s training squad from the West who joined the children for training drills and a game of touch rugby.
The children also participated in the QUICKRIP Festival in Nadi on August 24,” Mucunabitu said.
The club was also fortunate to receive jerseys, socks, t-shirts, shorts and rugby balls from Alison Foskett from Perth and Nerang Bulls Rugby Union in Queensland.
She thanked FRU development manager Koli Sewabu for his support.
