The Lautoka City council will work with Police to install CCTV cameras in crime zones. It is also looking for partnerships with cities overseas to be able to complete the planned project.

This was confirmed by the council’s chief executive officer, Jone Nakauvadra, yesterday.

Mr Nakauvadra said the plan was to install cameras in the Central Business District.

“We are looking for a joint venture with a sister city to come and sponsor the CCTV project, which we want to install all throughout the Central Business District as well as working with the Police in areas where there is a lot of crime,” he said. Mr Nakauvadra said other ongoing issues faced by the council were vandalism and drunkards hassling the general public. “One of the problems we face is the lack

of civic pride. There seems to be a lot of cases of vandalism of council properties and littering is another issue,” he said. “Police have set up a tent along Vitogo Parade every now and then to be the observation point for that area near the Anupam theatre,” he said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said: “For the CCTV cameras project, we are part of the ongoing discussions with the Lautoka City Council and we welcome the assistance.”

Ms Naisoro also responded to a plea from business owners for a Police Post along Vitogo Parade.

“There are things to consider such deployment, resources and manpower which is something that has to be considered by command. There are certain strategies we are putting in place that we cannot divulge publicly, but our operations are continuing as normal,” she said.
