Eighteen-year-old Taka Vulaono could only wish that his parents were present to witness him lead his school’s cadet passing out parade yesterday. The headboy of Ratu Sukuna Memorial School received the Baton of Honour Award at the parade at Suva’s Albert Park.

“I was surprised with the award because I was not expecting it, but I feel very happy with my achivement,” Taka said after receiving his award.

The lad who hails from Namukai-lau in Lau said leading the whole school in this year’s cadet passing out parade was an honour.

“In order to lead, you must first have self-discipline, then only you will be able to discipline others,” he

said.

Taka comes from a family with close ties to the military and Police backgrounds.

He aspires to join the military force after completing high school.

His older brother, Viliame Vulaono, could not be prouder of his brother’s achievement as he watched from the sidelines the commands dished out by him.

“My brother is a very quiet boy. He is the type of person who likes to isolate himself from everyone else and keeps to himself,” Mr Vulaono said.

“So I kept encouraging him to socialise with others. I told him of my expectations and for that I am very proud of him,” the 22-year-old said. Mr Vulaono later shared that they had lost both their parents. “Our parents have both passed away. Our dad passed away in 2011 and then in 2018 we lost our mother. My advice to youths is to never think low of themselves. If your parents have both passed away, never see it as a downfall, but a turning point for you to keep on going no matter what obstacles you face,” he added.
