Chang Starts Top Role at UniFiji

Staff and students of the University of Fiji Saweni Campus, Lautoka, have welcomed their first woman Vice Chancellor Professor Sushila Chang.

Originally from Singapore, Professor Chang started in her new role on Monday this week and was warmly welcomed by thousands of students on Wednesday.

In a statement, the University of Fiji’s Pro-Chancellor, Anil Tikaram,

said Professor Chang joined the University of Fiji from Cardiff Metropolit­an University, where she was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic.

Mr Tikaram said she previously held senior positions internatio­nally at The University of Queensland in Australia, Griffith University, the Singapore University of Technology including Design and Ngee Ann Polytechni­c in Singapore.

Professor Chang was also the cofounder of two research start-up companies in aquacultur­e and previously worked with Nestle SA. “Professor Chang maintains several industry and profession­al body membership­s, including the Board of the Internatio­nal Life Sciences Organisati­on, which she chaired from, 2010-2012 and remains a trustee,” he said. “She was also the president of the Singapore Associatio­n of Microbiolo­gy and Biotechnol­ogy for six terms.”

Mr Tikaram said Professor Chang had a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of London, a PHD in Cellular Biology and Toxicology from The University of Paris VII, including a graduate certificat­e in Intellectu­al Property Law from The National University in Singapore.

The University of Fiji sees hope in Professor Chang as it slowly normalises operations with a newly-appointed Vice Chancellor. Professor Chang’s appointmen­t was initially announced in February this year.
