Lau­toka in IDC ‘pool of death’

De­fend­ing Courts In­ter­dis­trict Cham­pi­ons Lau­toka have been drawn with the likes of Ba and Labasa in this year’s tour­na­ment which will be held at Prince Charles Park, in Nadi on Oc­to­ber 8. Ba re­cently topped the Voda­fone Pre­mier League points ta­ble while Labasa won the INKK Mo­bile Bat­tle of the Giants tour­na­ment.

Dubbed the ‘pool of death’, the three top teams will face min­nows Tavua as the fourth team.

Di­vi­sion pools also an­nounced that this year’s win­ner will re­ceive $25,000 in prize­money.

The other pool will see Nadi, Suva, gi­ant killers Nas­inu and Rewa bat­tle it out.

Pa­tel ac­knowl­edged Courts 20th year spon­sor­ship of this pres­ti­gious tour­na­ment in Fiji FA’s cal­en­dar. “This is the big­gest tour­na­ment be­cause fans come from all over the world,” he said.

This year’s tour­na­ment begins on Tues­day, Oc­to­ber 8, and will run the whole week with the semi-fi­nals for both the pre­mier and se­nior di­vi­sions to be held on Satur­day, Oc­to­ber 12 and the fi­nals the fol­low­ing day. The week­long tour­na­ment will en­sure that there is no break in the tour­na­ment.

Tavua will play their fi­nal pre­mier tour­na­ment and matches in the IDC as from next year they would be rel­e­gated with Navua mov­ing up to pre­mier di­vi­sion.

Pa­tel said Min­is­ter for Lo­cal Govern­ment Premila Ku­mar has as­sisted with mak­ing sure that Prince Charles Park was in top shape for the tour­na­ment.

With this year’s pre­mier prize­money raised to $25,000, the run­ner-up will re­ceive $6000 with los­ing semi­fi­nal­ists get­ting $1000 each.

The win­ner of the se­nior di­vi­sion will get $7500, run­ner-up $2500 and los­ing semi-fi­nal­ists $500 each. Courts spon­sors the IDC tour­na­ment each year with $120,000.

Courts (Fiji) Lim­ited chie ex­ec­u­tive officer PL Manas­inghe said the tour­na­ment was the old­est tour­na­ment in the coun­try and the com­pany has been pro­vid­ing spon­sor­ship for the past 20 years.

“Courts IDC is one of the most pop­u­lar and spe­cial tour­na­ment in Fiji FA’s cal­en­dar,” Mu­nas­inghe said. “Courts and the IDC have be­come synony­mous.”
