Lawyer: Plea contrary
The defence lawyer for Chinese national Wang Qi Yong, who is facing one count of murder, says the accused’s plea was contrary to her instructions.
Wang appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar yesterday. It is alleged Wang caused the death of an Asian woman, who was found dead at her home in Namadi Heights, Tamavua, on May 13. The charge was read to the court in English and with assistance of the interpreter,
the charge was read to Wang in Chinese Mandarin language. Wang told the court through the interpreter that he understood the charge and pleaded guilty to the offence.
However, defence lawyer Talei Kean from the Legal Aid Commission told the court that she wished to speak to her client again because his plea was contrary to the instructions she had received. Wang was remanded. The matter adjourned for mention to check on the guilty plea on October 25.
