Lawyer: Plea con­trary

The de­fence lawyer for Chinese na­tional Wang Qi Yong, who is fac­ing one count of mur­der, says the ac­cused’s plea was con­trary to her in­struc­tions.

Wang ap­peared be­fore Jus­tice Daniel Goundar yes­ter­day. It is al­leged Wang caused the death of an Asian woman, who was found dead at her home in Na­madi Heights, Ta­mavua, on May 13. The charge was read to the court in English and with as­sis­tance of the in­ter­preter,

the charge was read to Wang in Chinese Man­darin lan­guage. Wang told the court through the in­ter­preter that he un­der­stood the charge and pleaded guilty to the of­fence.

How­ever, de­fence lawyer Talei Kean from the Le­gal Aid Com­mis­sion told the court that she wished to speak to her client again be­cause his plea was con­trary to the in­struc­tions she had re­ceived. Wang was re­manded. The mat­ter ad­journed for men­tion to check on the guilty plea on Oc­to­ber 25.
