Police, Medics and Firefighters Conduct Live Emergency Response Exercise
Live emergency drills are conducted to create awareness and keep personnel updated that safety is paramount.
A Live Emergency Response Exercise was conducted on Monday involving Police, firefighters and medical personnel rushing to an emergency crash drill at the Fiji Gas terminal at Matintar in Nadi on Monday.
The drill was coordinated by Fiji Gas.
Nadi Site Warden and coordinator, Ashwin Kumar, said all stakeholders involved played a major role in emergency situations.
“In a year we have two live emergency drills, one is inside the classroom and one is live where we involve NFA, medical personnel and Police,” he said.
“If it is a bomb threat then we will involve the dog unit and Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).”
Mr Kumar said deputy site wardens were responsible for controlling the situation during an emergency and conducted evacuation, directing all information and plans to enter a building on fire either to NFA or the Police. “We will give them the site plans how to enter the building if a victim is still stuck inside. If it is a building on fire the NFA will take over and whoever arrives first will take the lead in the emergency work that they can do,” Mr Kumar said.
Mr Kumar said the purpose of involving the Police, NFA and medical teams was because they played a major role in a real situation and the live emergency drill exercise was also a way to train people to be prepared for any disturbances.
“We provide awareness to people and that is why we involve all stakeholders. Safety is paramount here. Our people need to be trained on what they need to do and how they need to conduct the evacuation of a building if there is a fire emergency,” he added.
