Fiji’s chances

-

Donald Singh, Lautoka

Disillusioned. That’s the word. Why are we still being told that we still have a chance? Funnily enough we are expecting a bonus point win over Wales, and then expecting Uruguay to beat Wales, already looking past Georgia who swatted aside Uruguay easily.

Let’s accept it, that big blooper against Uruguay sealed it for us. It’s time to enjoy the World Cup watching teams that are on a mission.

Reminiscing a bit, it’s my fault. Some weeks ago when Fiji beat the Maoris, then lost to Japan and then toiled against Tonga, it was me predicting a storm by Fiji at Rugby World Cup (RWC). The storm is approaching Japan, says the weatherman, but that may only shift Wednesday’s match.

Wales showed pedigree. Uruguay prepared for one game, then wilted away. Georgia has been in the reckoning for some time now. Fiji did prepare, but not to win.

Josh Matavesi even had the audacity to smile for the cameras after fluffing his kicks, the easy ones.

The RWC is taking shape and the contenders are stamping their mark, so is Fiji, for the wooden spoon.

Yes, we will play the likes of Cook Islands and Solomons to get to RWC 2023.

And we will foolishly celebrate those big wins.

If we contrive to lose against Georgia, that will be a new low. Coach John McKee must go. I read this line somewhere last week, and I agree. Everyone else is entitled to his or opinion, and everyone else doesn’t necessarily have to be realistic and honest in opinionating. Ilivasi Tabua?

I’ll cheer on anyway. As always, let’s play for pride and win one game, as always.
