Arecord number of Fijians turned up for the Legal Aid Commission Fiji Roadshow in Ba and took advantage of free legal services and advice provided by the Commission.

Fijians were lined up from as early as 7am to take advantage of free legal services and advice provided at the event which was held at the Ba bus stand.

The roadshow is part of regular community outreach programmes conducted by the

Commission which, in addition to providing legal aid services for free to those who may have difficulty coming to their offices, also serves to educate

Fijians about their legal rights.

“We exist to ensure that Fijians, especially those who cannot afford a private lawyer, get access to legal services and community outreach is very important to ensure Fijians are aware and engaged through every way possible,” said director Legal Aid Commission Fiji, Shahin Ali.

“The Commission was delighted with the large turnout. We got the information about the event out on our social media platforms, after recently strengthening expertise in this area by engaging a Strategic Communications Firm.” “Some of the services provided at the Roadshow included the free drafting of wills, advice on criminal, family and civil law matter from divorce to custody disputes and even bail and mitigation rules.”

“We were also able to inform them about their legal rights in cases like getting arrested, so they are better equipped to handle such situations.

“The services provided at the roadshows will not be strictly limited to legal issues,” Mr Ali emphasised.

“If Fijians are facing issues with their water, electricity, social services or a delay from an authority on their applications for land or lease renewals, they can also visit us and we will help them follow up.”

Mr Ali attributed the success of the roadshow to their strategic communications firm for their great work in promoting the roadshow and most importantly the staff who took time out to serve the community of Ba.
