Hawkers Ordered Not to Sell on Footpaths
Hawkers have been issued a warning not to conduct any business or sell on Suva’s footpaths.
These hawkers are vendors of merchandise that can be easily transported. Their businesses include peddling of inexpensive goods, handicrafts or food items. Whether stationary or mobile, hawkers often advertise by loud street cries or chants and conduct banter with customers, to attract attention and enhance sales Suva and Lami special administrators’ chairperson Isikeli Tikoduadua said the Suva City Council (SCC) enforcement team had been told to conduct daily monitoring of vendors peddling their goods on Suva’s footpaths and to remove them.
He said that these hawkers were blocking the pathway and creating unnecessary inconvenience for members of the public. Mr Tikoduadua said there were vacant spaces at the Suva Municipal Market for hire.

is for the public to use,” he said. “The Suva City Council enforcement team will be tough on these vendors.”
Mr Tikoduadua said there were some vendors selling illegally on the road side.
They are urged to sell their goods, merchandise and or food parcels at the places provided by the council.
“I know they survive on the money they get from selling, but they have to ply their business from allocated legal places,” he said.
“If vendors refused to leave, the Police will be asked to help in their removal.”
