Council to Illegal Vendors: Move or We’ll Confiscate Goods
Defiant illegal Nabua vendors have been told that the Suva City Council will now take a hard line against those violating municipal laws. This will start with the removal of the illegal vegetable vendors in Nabua.
This situation had grown out of hand because people had erected stalls by themselves using materials that were unsafe. The vendors were also not paying fees.
After trying to defy the council for a week, the vendors were told to leave on Friday but some came back yesterday. Members of the SCC enforcement team have told vendors they would now risk confiscation of their produce if they continue to defy directives.
Suva and Lami special administrators’ chairperson Isikeli Tikoduadua said: “Our enforcement team was in Nabua and vendors have been told what will happen.
“We will be building a proper market with solid structures so it benefits all and does not violate any laws.”
The vendors have understood the council’s plans.
When contacted yesterday, most of them said they would be moving elsewhere.
Mr Tikoduadua said the vendors are not the only ones who have been visited by the enforcement teams. He said illegal vendors in other locations will also be visited.
Action on abandoned vehicles
Meanwhile, at Moala Street in Samabula, owners of derelict vehicles were served with notices and the council removed three of the four that were there.
The council also issued notice to Sunbeam Transport Limited which has been seen parking buses on both sides of the road. Mr Tikoduadua said to ensure better policing of violations on roads, the council will sign an agreement with Fiji Roads Authority and Land Transport Authority.
