A-G calls for unity, tells QVS students to look after the weak

- SHALVEEN CHAND Edited by Percy Kean

Stop marginalising the weak. Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted in his keynote address during the Queen Victoria School prize giving in Tailevu yesterday.

QVS students were told that all religions of the world had the same message of love, peace and unity.

He said ganging up and picking on the weak does not make anyone stronger.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said it was very important for the future of the nation that everyone was united.

“We need not only think what we have achieved as a nation in the past 50 years, but where we will be in the next 50 years? How do we see ourselves in 50 years time?

“That is the challenge.

“We are only as strong as how well we look after our weak, the minority and the vulnerable. “If someone is marginalising someone who is weak, we should not be joining in.

“If you do that we don’t become strong as a nation.” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also reminded parents that it was in the interest of their children that they be allowed to become what they liked to do.

“We must let our young people flourish in the areas they are good in,” he said.

“In Fiji we have a culture of everyone wanting their children to become doctors and engineers. Children should be allowed to take up work in the field they are interested in.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted the labour shortage in certain fields.

He said Fiji lacked professional tile layers and other tradesmen.

He said this gap was now being filled with foreign workers. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also reminded students that climate change was a reality and this was an area which in the future could provide opportunities as well.
