Rain fails to dampen Diwali spirits

- SHREEYA VERMA Edited by Percy Kean

Not even the continual rain and forecast for more wet weather will dampen the spirit of Hindu families and Fijians who are eagerly looking forward to a grand Diwali celebration this weekend

Despite the prevailing conditions, some families said they were ever ready to light up diyas on this auspicious annual occasion. Among them are the Prasad family of Suva realising there is no way to stop the gloomy and rainy weather conditions predicted by the Fiji Meteorological Services Visham Prasad, 22, said Diwali came once a year and there was no way to stop the festive mood because his family had prepared so many things like sweets and food for family and friends.

“We certainly cannot control the weather and Diwali comes once a year so despite how the weather is, we can put aside a day to appreciate our culture.”

“What matters the most is to keep your heart clean, do Pooja to Maha Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) and if rain continues, light up diyas or candles in the corridors or use electrical lights for light and enthusiasm,” he said.

A Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) report said a trough of low pressure remains slow moving over Fiji and was expected to remain slow right through the Diwali weekend,”.

Showers will continue over Vanua Levu, the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu, and the smaller islands. Prolonged showers or drizzle should be expected. Showers will be heavy at times so members of the public need to keep a lookout, especially those who live along low lying areas.

Staff of the Fiji Meteorological Service wishes a Happy Diwali to all Fijians.
