Students Eye Taking Part in More Sustainability Contests
Kamil Muslim College students Shahil Hussain and Alsheikh Ashad are eager to work hard and represent their school in more global competitions on sustainability.
The pair, Year 12 students in Ba, arrived into the country on Saturday after representing Fiji at the Zayed Sustainability Prize Competition Abu Dhabi.
The global competition saw 30 secondary schools selected to participate at the event where one winner was declared by the hosts.
Kiribati was announced the winner.
The students were invited to come with their individual innovative proposals relating to sustainability.
Alsheikh said their proposal to use solar-powered panels allowed their school to save $1000 a month on electricity and water bills.
“Our project was about sustainability and the first component was the installation of solar panels to power up the electricity system in our college, thus saving costs for bills every month,” he said.
“From the solar energy we would generate electricity.
“We also proposed to install water refinery systems to give students clean drinking water.
“Again we have been saving $1000 in water bills because at the moment our school is paying too much.
“There is also a focus on food because we want to have an integrated fish farm and an upgraded greenhouse, which could supply our school canteen with protein and greens to ensure a balanced meal.”
Shahil said he was grateful for the acknowledgement by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, on the hard work the college team had put in.
Their science teacher, Rinal Prasad, said the vision for the college was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the country’s Sustainable Development Goals of “quality inclusive education through sustainability, innovation and empowerment”.
