The 54-strong Republic of Fiji Military Forces engineering contingent deployed to assist in the bushfire battle in Australia arrived to warm greetings at the Melbourne airport.

Former Fiji residents, Fiji’s High Commissioner to Australia Luke Daunivalu and members of the Australian Defence Force greeted them.

The RFMF soldiers will assist in rebuilding efforts and clearing of debris from affected areas. Mr Daunivalu said Australia had always been a good friend to Fiji and this was Fiji’s time to help a neighbour who was in need during a time of crisis.

Mr Daunivalu reminded the troops that the task at hand was tough.

“On behalf of families in Australia we welcome you, we are here to support you,” Mr Daunivalu said as he greeted the troop at the airport in Melbourne, Australia. “Your task here is not easy, you mission will be hard, our prayers and support are with you, just as our prayers have been with the Australian people in the time of crisis.

“You are not alone. I want to thank the Australian Government and its people for facilitating your stay here.”

Thousands of homes have been damaged by 100 plus bushfires that spread across Australia. Many animals have also perished in the fires as well as human lives lost. Victoria Fijian Community president Sylvia Chand said they were very proud that the RFMF troops were here.

“Their presence here is living testimony of the Fijian generosity and humbleness which we are famous for,” she said.

“Every little bit of assitance helps heal Australia in this bushfire crisis and the soldiers will no doubt be receiving in return a wealth of experience and appreciation of the Australian land and its people.”
