Thomas Markle says Meghan and Harry are ‘turning royal family into Walmart with a crown’
London: Meghan Markle’s father Thomas has accused his daughter of ‘cheapening’ the royal family and ‘turning it into a Walmart with a crown on’.
The estranged 75-year-old spoke in a TV documentary as he described Meghan and Harry’s behaviour as embarrassing and that they are ‘turning into lost souls’.
His comments were made public after it was revealed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer be using their HRH titles and receiving public funds for royal duties.
Speaking to Channel 5, Mr Markle says: “When they got married they took on an obligation, and the obligation is to be part of the royals and to represent the royals.
“And it would be foolish for them not to. This is one of the greatest long-living institutions ever.
“They are destroying it, they are cheapening it, making it shabby. They are turning it into a Walmart with a crown on it, they shouldn’t be doing this.”
The 90-minute documentary, Thomas Markle: My Story, includes his ‘complicated’ relationship with Meghan and their fallout prior to the royal wedding in May 2018.
He mentioned: “With Meghan and Harry separating from the royals...it’s disappointing because she actually got every girl’s dream.
“Every young girl wants to become a princess and she got that and now she’s tossing that away...it looks like she’s tossing that away for money.”
Although Meghan and Harry have now agreed to repay the cost of refurbishment on their home at Frogmore Cottage , Mr Markle said he felt embarrassed when they used the public funding to renovate the home.
“Apparently £$3 million (FJ$ 8.4m) and a 26-room home isn’t enough for them… it is kind of embarrassing to me,” he added. Buckingham Palace said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex intend to repay £2.4million (FJ$6.7m) while they seek to become financially independent. Mirror
