Non-compliance Will Result In Fines: Nasinu Town Council
The Nasinu Town Council has hit back at residents saying fines would follow if there was non-compliance with the regulation that covers household, green and solid waste separation. Chairperson of Special Administrators for Nasinu and Nausori Elizabeth Algar said while the Nasinu Town Council realised that they had to do their part, collective action was needed to tackle high volumes of waste.
“Residents and the Council must work together to address the mountain of rubbish dumped outside of homes and on the roadside,” Ms Algar said.
“It’s extremely hazardous for council workers, the community at large and poses severe health risks for everyone.
“The lack of waste separation has slowed current schedules. Waste management is everyone’s business - irresponsible residents will be fined accordingly.”
As part of the Council’s waste management strategy, stage pickups have been completed in Caubati, Narere, Makoi, Tuirara, Tovata, Narere stage 1 and part of Muanikoso Housing.
Ms Algar said there was no reason why residents could not practice composting and mulching to reduce the volume of green and kitchen waste.
She said composting bins were available at the council office for $30.
The Nasinu Town Council had been working closely with the Ministry of Health to drive awareness on the importance of separating waste and preventing health hazards.
Residents can contact the Council for collection schedules, seek advice on removal options and arrange for special pickups.
