Head Girl Attributes Success to Family Love, Endless Support
With her family’s love and endless support in her bag, a confident Kaelyn Pickering was badged head girl of Saint Joseph’s Secondary School yesterday.
Kaelyn said her family was her foundation. “Thank you, mum and dad, for moulding me into the person I am today,” she said.
“To my grandparents, and my dear nau, thank you for all the memories, stories and wise advice you have shared with me. I will always cherish all the time spent with you.” The 18-year-old hails from Rewa and has maternal links to Taveuni. Kaelyn said she was surprised with her appointment, but was determined to do her best to lead and help the students.
“I was quite in shock, I was not expecting this. I can only do my best to lead and help the girls,” she said.
“I am grateful to them for choosing me and giving me this opportunity to experience.” As the head girl, Kaelyn plans to make the student council more active and create advocacy platforms for the girls to be able to speak out on issues such as climate change and much more.
“In doing this, the girls will be able to speak out on issues they feel passionate about,” she said.
“Some subjects for these platforms include climate change, women empowerment and gender equality.”
Her dad Joeli Pickering, was an immensely happy and proud father during the induction. “I am very, very happy and proud of her being inducted head girl of Saint Joseph’s Secondary School,” Mr Pickering said.
“I just thank God for his blessing. I pray that God will guide her throughout 2020.”
Kaelyn hopes to get a scholarship to study at an international institution in the future.
