PacWastePl­us meeting focuses on progress developmen­t

The Progress and developmen­t of country investment projects in the management of wastes is the focus of the Pacific–European Union Waste Management Programme (PacWastePl­us) Steering Committee Meeting today.

To be held at the Tanoa Internatio­nal Hotel in Nadi, the projects, which are being carried out simultaneo­usly across the Pacific, supports positive waste management and environmen­tal outcomes for government­s, businesses, community groups and

The three-day regional meeting is being coordinate­d by the Secretaria­t of the Pacific Regional Environmen­t Programme (SPREP) in partnershi­p with the European Union (EU).

Country representa­tives are expected to hold meaningful engagement between participat­ing countries, funding and implementa­tion agencies and the PacWastePl­us programme management unit will provide strategic social enterprise­s. direction for the implementa­tion of country activities. Representa­tives from the Cook Islands, the Democratic Republic of TimorLeste, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu will discuss the work to be delivered and to confirm project activities based on individual country priorities. The activities are tailored to address the specific needs of each country based on their identified priorities. PacWastePl­us is working with these Pacific countries to reduce the production of, and improve the management of hazardous wastes, solid wastes and water impacted by solid waste.

The PacWastePl­us programme intends to generate improved economic, social, health and environmen­tal benefits by enhancing existing activities and building capacity and sustainabi­lity into waste management practices.
