Yalikanacea Restarts Dilo Oil Business
Former agriculture officer Susana Yalikanacea has restarted her dilo oil business in Cicia, Lau.
Dilo oil is made from the dilo nuts and dilo tree (Calophyllum inophyllum), which grows well on the island.
Ms Yalikanacea had operated a dilo oil business on the island before and because of local demand, she has reopened it.
“I’ve been receiving calls from the islands in Lau and also from Viti Levu to restart my dilo oil business,” she said.
Ms Yalikanacea said she would only sell the oil to the women in Cicia and other islands in Lau. Ms Yalikanacea is selling a 30ml bottle for $10.
“My local price is different from my market price.”
She said she recently sent a $300 order to a customer in Nadi.
Work on the production of oil, she said, started with collecting the dilo nut around the island.
She said dilo nuts were air dried in the shade for several months before being opened to get the inner nut for cold pressing. Ms Yalikanacea said she had engaged the help of two women to work fulltime with her to produce the oil.
