Jordie’s Monster Penalty Secures Canes First Win

-

Jordie Barrett shattered the record for the long- est penalty kick by a Kiwi, landing a 63m effort in the Hurricanes’ 26-23 win over the Jaguares in Buenos Aires, Argentina yesterday

With his first attempt at goal, Barrett landed a colossal effort from 63 metres out, beating the 60 metre penalty kicked by Dan Carter in 2006 against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld.

Barrett’s kick made all the more impressive by the fact that the ball was still travelling after it passed through the uprights and over the dead ball line. South Africa’s Francois Steyn is another to pass the 60m mark with a shot at goal, coming against the All Blacks in Hamilton in 2009.

NEW ERA

All Blacks head coach Ian Foster has a mind for change in the new era of All Blacks rugby, but stops well short of declaring an end to the Richie Mo’ungaBeauden Barrett dual playmaker concept.

Foster, in an interview with the Stuff at his rural Waikato home, steadfastly refused to declare the Mo’unga-Barrett tandem a failure, despite the semifinal defeat to England at the World Cup which many will claim was the only barometer by which it should be measured.

“There will be a lot of people who will laugh at that because we lost a semifinal, but the reality is we largely got two really good decision-makers heavily involved in the game making decisions,” said Foster.

“Is that the reason we lost a semi? I don’t think so. But certainly there were some decisions that game under pressure we didn’t make very well.
