World’s Biggest News Agency, Fiji Sun Expand Partnership
Fiji’s biggest newspaper and the world’s biggest news agency have grown their partnership.
The Fiji Sun and Xinhua News Agency signed an agreement this week to provide the Fiji Sun with Xinhua’s English Multimedia Service.
Xinhua Fiji bureau chief Yongxing Zhang and Fiji Sun Publisher/chief executive Peter Lomas signed in a ceremony at the Fiji Sun boardroom.
The Fiji Sun already receives Xinhua’s global news service.
The addition of the multimedia service now also provides news and information integrated with text, photos and videos ready for online circulation
Mr Lomas said Xinhua has a global news gathering network of 220 bureaus in addition to its comprehensive service from China. It is the largest news agency in the world in terms of correspondents worldwide.
Xinhua Global reach Xinhua’s global reach is underscored by it being the only international news agency with a bureau in the English-speaking Pacific Islands.
This is in Suva and is headed by Mr Yongxing, a vastly experienced international correspondent who has had leading roles recently in USA and Singapore bureaus . Mr Lomas said other news agencies, such as Australian Associated Press, had long ago abandoned their bureaus in countries such as Fiji.
But Mr Lomas said: “Xinhua is on the ground daily not just in the developed world but also throughout the developing world. It provides a well rounded and balanced range of news, including politics, economy, society reportage. It does not just show up when there are the three Cs - crisis, coups and cyclones.” Mr Yongxing said Xinhua was pleased to expand its services with Fiji’s leading newspaper.
He said Fiji Sun is an established and reputable news brand which took international news coverage seriously.
