Need to Attract Visitors, Create Opportunity for All
The outcome of a tourism roundtable discussion in Savusavu has noted the need to attract more visitors that can create opportunities for all. Savusavu and Labasa Town Council Special Administrator Justin Hunter said the discussion conducted by the International Finance Corporate (IFC) and the World Bank on Monday was successful.
“We have been working with the Government, World Bank and other stakeholders to look at requirements needed to boost foreign exchange earnings in the north and specifically tourism,” Mr Hunter said.
“There are a lot of potential in the Northern Division.
“We can work to have a holistic approach that provides opportunities for all members of our communities.”
“We believe this low volume high yield tourism market can only be obtained by merging environmental, cultural conservation and economic opportunities,” he said.
“Ways can be looked into to create a low-volume and high- yield model for Savusavu and the North tourism aligned with Government’s social and environmental goals.
“The other idea is to develop and promote land-based eco-tourism (including agro- ecotourism).
Upgrade of Savusavu Market
On the upgrade works of the Savusavu Municipal Market, he said this was currently on hold.
“Our towns and markets specifically are a unique attraction for visitors and this creates opportunities for everyone in our community,” he said.
“Hence, it is one of those reasons we had put a hold to the upgrade of Savusavu market.
“We have to relook at how conducive it can be for our long-term vision and plans.”
We can work to have a holistic approach that provides opportunities for all members of our communities.
