Meeting Enables Fijian Nurses Gain Network for Specialised Fields
The director of nursing at the Lautoka Hospital, Matron Milika Narogo, says the Inaugural Pacific Heads of Nursing meeting will enable them to get training in specialised fields.
Matron Narogo was speaking at the threeday meeting held at Pullman Nadi Bay Resort and Spa on Tuesday.
“This is an opportunity for us to get some of our partners to assist us in the specialisation of our nurses in Fiji,” she added.
Project co-ordinator Pacific Regional Clinical Services, Mabel Taoi said the meeting is envisioned to improve Fiji’s nursing issues.
“2020 is a very important year. It has been designated as the year of the nurse and midwife and to bring at the forefront the issues in nursing,” she said.
“And we know that nurses make the majority of your workforce in the country so this meeting is very appropriate not only to celebrate by a WHO declaration but also to look into Florence Nightingale.”
Ms Taoi said they were looking at relevant issues and human resources which she said will be in the state world nursing reports. The meeting is the platform to present recommendations to the Pacific Health Meeting in April.
Meanwhile, Dr Paula Vivili, the director for the South Pacific Community (SPC)’s Public Health Division said the meeting was timely given that 2020 was the Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
“Nurses are the first point of contact in health facilities and our communities and are the backbone for an operational medical and health workforce,” Dr Vivili said.
“We will not achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 on health and well- being in the Pacific region without a robust nursing workforce.” The meeting ends today.
