It wasn’t Easter bunnies or eggs that a 13-year-old carried and distributed in her basket, but goodies of love to remember those impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions.

Mary McEwan Tagi of Nadi Airport School, teaches us what it means to be a compassionate neighbour. And in the face of adversity, good will always triumph.

The Year Eight student baked banana bread for six families in Lautoka and a Solomon Island student who were stranded in Nadi yesterday.

Her mother, Sainiana Tagi said Mary always had a big heart for everyone and it was her idea to start helping affected families in the Nadi to Lautoka area.

“Mary kept insisting that we at least bake banana bread and deliver them to families who had been affected by the COVID-19 or TC Harold in the Nadi to Lautoka corridor,” Ms Tagi said.

“I was hesitant at first because I knew the amount of baking we would do but she kept insisting that she would do the baking and I was just to guide her in the process,” she said.

“Mary did all the baking right up to wrapping and we assisted her with the delivery.”

She said they delivered banana bread to four families in Lautoka, one family in Votualevu and to a Solomon Island student who was stranded in Namaka.

“We managed to deliver everything before curfew last night.” Ms Tagi said it was important that Fijians look after the needs of one another during these trying times. “Everyone is suffering one way or the other from this pandemic and now a devastating cyclone has affected parts of our country,” she said.

“Help a family out, that is what we Fijians are known for. The spirit of veilomani.”
