Mother’s Day in a tent for family of 12

ABa man, who is the sole breadwinne­r, for his family of 12, is dishearten­ed that he will not be able to provide a proper Mother’s Day meal for his family today.

Peni Tale Nacagilevu, 54, lost everything in a fire which destroyed his family’s five bedroom wooden home, at Navoli Settlement in Ba on Friday afternoon. Mr Nacagilevu has been a market vendor for the last 12 years and has been the sole provider for his family. The family could not save anything from their home.

“I’m the only one that is putting food on the table,” he said.

“We couldn’t save anything we had only the clothes on our back.” Mr Nacagilevu said he was asleep when the fire started.

“I was sleeping at the back near the kitchen, I think the fire started from the second bedroom in the front,” he said.

“My wife started yelling so I just woke up and ran out quickly and tried to save my family.”

He is living with his four three grandchild­ren other close family members. children, and

“We have now set up a tent just outside the home where we will be staying for now till there is an alternativ­e,” he said.

“I’m not feeling very good, I am dishearten­ed at the moment because this will not be a good Mother’s Day for the family.” Mr Nacagilevu is thankful to his neighbours for coming forward to assist them with their immediate needs.

Police Spokespers­on, Ana Naisoro said the investigat­ions conducted by the National Fire Authority would determine the cause of the fire.
