Happy Mother’s Day to all our great mothers

- NEMANI DELAIBATIKI Feedback: nemani.delaibatiki@fijisun.com.fj

Today we wish all mothers a happy Mother’s Day. In these unusual times we pay tribute to all mothers wherever they may be and thank them for their service, compassion and love. We recognise those mothers who have spent their time in the frontline fighting COVID-19 away from their families. We also pay compliments to mothers who have had to singlehandedly look after the family while their husbands are at the frontline or doing other essential work.

Apart from the nice food and goodies we traditionally treat our mothers to on this day, the best present is to honour and respect them – not just today – but every day.

They deserve it because of their unconditional love for their families. It is they who hold the family together in times of hardship and crisis as we are facing now.

They are the backbone of the family. When they suffer the whole family suffers.

It’s the reason why we must ensure that they are happy all the time.

But it is sad to note that on this Mother’s Day some of our mothers are marooned on the sandbanks of life – as victims of abuse and loneliness.

They are heartbroken, lonely and disillusioned about life.

Some are trapped, suffering quietly from domestic violence, physical and psychological abuse and isolation from loved ones.

No mother deserves to be abused and forgotten. Yet it happens and it’s a shame.

If Mother’s Day is celebrated, then we have to make it meaningful instead of it becoming a once a year event that seems more commercialised than anything else.

Everyone of us has a mother. For those of us who are fortunate to have their mothers still alive, it’s a time to express our appreciation for raising us because without them we would not be where we are today. Not just today but as often as we possibly can. A phone call, a brief note in the mail and online make a big difference in their lives.

They know that they are not forgotten, that we do care and love them – that we are there to help them when they need assistance. This is especially for those of us who do not live with our parents.

For those of us who do, use every opportunity to be of service to our mothers. Sometimes we take our mothers for granted by not taking their valuable advice seriously. We grow up, become independent and we think we know everything. Mothers will not mislead their children. They will nurture and protect them. It is a mother’s instinct and divine nature. We need to remember that we will all grow old and we must teach our children to love their mothers. So on this Mother’s Day let’s pray for our mothers that they be kept safe and well during this crisis.
