Racist Comments Debate

- SHALVEEN CHAND

Audio recordings of racist and sexist remarks made by a member of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) supporting the Kshatriya Hall faction has not gone down well with members of the rival faction. Social media posts on alleged audio recordings of conversation between two senior party members said the party was not for Indo Fijians and women should not be allowed to take up leadership roles. Members of the faction gathered at Holiday Inn, Suva did not take too well to this and were quick to show their disappointment on various online forums.

According to the audio recording, the member said SODELPA was a party for iTaukei only and not for any other races.

He said no woman except for Ro Teimumu Kepa should be allowed in a leadership role and alleged that Anare Jale was a weak link in the party.

When questioned about the audio recording SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka maintained SODELPA were inclusive of all Fijians regardless of race, religion and gender. Mr Rabuka said on Saturday afternoon, that the alleged conversation did not take place at nor was it part of any discussions during their meeting at Kshatriya Hall.

“It was not discussed and it never came up during the meet,” Mr Rabuka said.

“The party constitution and vision clearly states that the party would like to form a Government that is multi-racial in nature and would uphold good governance and transparency in due processes,” he said.
