Muslim communities in Aotearoa

New Zealand.

“I know that Eid is a day of joy and celebration for those of Islamic faith. It is considered a gift from Allah, and a time to get together with friends, family and community from near and far, with the sharing of sweets, gifts (particularly for kids) and food also forming an important part of the festivities.

“Most years Mosques are full with hundreds of worshippers on Eid. This year, the occasion will fall at a time when we’re sadly having to limit the size of gatherings, as we all work together to battle the global pandemic that is COVID-19.

“I want to acknowledge what a sacrifice this is for everyone, but to also share my thanks for the way the Muslim community has come together to support one another at this time, especially through such an important period. This in itself is an act of kindness and charity.

“Very shortly I hope we will be able to see an increase in the number of people who will be able to gather together again. Till then, I wish all our Muslim communities Eid Mubarak and a wonderful day celebration with your close family and friends.”
