seals two-year deal with Perpignan RC in the Pro D2 competition
France-based Alivereti Duguivalu Nauga is keeping his options open on representing France or Fiji in future. The 22-year- old centre, son of Nadroga Rugby head coach Esala Nauga, signed a two -year contract with Perpignan RC which competes in the Pro D2 competition in France.
The former Nadroga Under-20 skipper is a product of the USAP Perpignan Academy and has played eight senior games since arriving there in 2018.
“It would be an honour to play for France should I be given an opportunity. But on the other hand, just like any other young, aspiring Fijian rugby player, playing for Fiji would be a dream come true,” he said.
Other Fijians in the club include Flying Fijians first five-eighth Ben Volavola who has just joined the club, and Taniela Ramasibana.
“A humbling opportunity, grateful to God for having made it this far especially after three years at USAP Perpignan Academy and excited for what the future holds.”
Before Alivereti puts pen to paper he consulted his father first.
“I consulted my dad regarding my career. He always knows best considering his knowledge and experience in rugby. It was very important for me to once again hear him out not only as my father but mentor,” he added.
He said the club observed and adhered to safety precautions during COVID-19 pandemic.
“We were issued training programmes by our trainer and encouraged to take safety measures such as strictly keeping our distance, staying at home and visiting our doctor when the need arises.”
Memorable journey
It has been a challenging yet memorable journey as being far away from home hasn’t always been easy adjusting to a new lifestyle and environment.
“Coming from a small country and being exposed to a larger, more advanced and developed one was an eye-opener. I’m thankful to the club, my fellow teammates and Fijians who’ve always looked out for me,” he said.
