Ono Group Overseas Thank Govt
Fijians living in California, United States of America, are grateful to the Fijian Government for helping them reach out to their families affected by Tropical Cyclone Harold in Kadavu.
The group is part of the Ono Foundation that shipped six tons of goods free of charge on the government ship - Bai Ni Takali.
Bai Ni Takali left Walu Bay yesterday for the Kadavu islands with its first stop over at Vabea Village.
Ono Foundation Suva representative, Lepani Vunituraga said: “This is relief work that was organised by the Ono Foundation based in California, America, and has members in Canada and Florida.
“They sent over $20,000 to buy food supplies and other necessities so when we had the six tons of goods here, we wrote a letter to ask for support from the Ministry of Transport to help with its shipment.
“We had a meeting with Minister for Transport Faiyaz Koya, who happily agreed to have this private-public partnership and to have these six tons worth of goods free of charge transported to Kadavu.”
Villagers of the seven villages in Ono district, Kadavu: Waisomo, Narikoso, Naqara, Nabouwalu, Buliya, Dravuni, and Vabea - are part of the foundation.
“There are 208 families living in Ono, Kadavu. About $150 worth of goods will be distributed to each family. Each family will receive three large bags containing dry goods like flour, sugar, dhal, rice, oil, tuna, biscuits and the other necessities including clothes,” Mr Vunituraga said.
“We are grateful to the support coming in from overseas and the Government. This is a good partnership example of how we can all better reach and help those in need.”
