C ome to Fiji, we are COVID-free. That’s the proposed slogan for Fiji as a destination by Sujiro Seam.
He is the Head of the European Union Delegation for the Pacific.
Yesterday, he congratulated the Fijian Government for achieving a COVID-19 free status.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed that Fiji had cleared the last three active COVID-19 patients who were in isolation at the Navua Hospital.
“And even with our testing numbers climbing by the day, it’s now been 45 days since we recorded our last case. With no deaths, our recovery rate is 100 per cent,” he said.
This is a milestone achievement. Mr Bainimarama attributed our virus-free status to “answered prayers, hard work, and affirmation of science”.
It took the entire Government and community effort to be COVID-free. Our healthcare workers, Police and disciplined forces and all essential service providers – you’re the real champions.
“I want to extend a big, heartfelt “vinaka vakalevu” to our frontline healthcare heroes, our contact tracing team, and our disciplined forces –– all of whom have made extraordinary sacrifices to keep Fiji safe. While their work is far from over, getting us to this milestone is a massive win in itself –– so we all owe them a debt of gratitude.”
But we must not rest on our laurels. A second or third wave of the virus is possible – a message often highlighted by the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete. Edited by Naisa Koroi
