Teacher Launches YouTube Channel to Teach Maths in iTaukei Language
Suva Grammar School’s assistant principal has set up a YouTube channel to teach students Mathematics in the iTaukei
language.
Koroi Matadigo did this with a strong desire to teach many Fijian students in a language they understand and speak every day as schools remain closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic
With over 23 years of teaching experience in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Mr Matadigo said he hopes his channel can help iTaukei
students in the remotest parts of the country understand the principles of the subject better in their mother tongue.
He said his lessons were not limited to students of Suva Grammar School, but to all iTaukei-language speaking students who were struggling with the subject.
The YouTube channel,
‘iTaukei Maths’, consists of named tutorial videos ranging from topics like Algebra and Factorisation focusing on Year 12 Mathematics.
“What I have noted through my teaching experience is that most students, particularly iTaukei students, find difficulties understanding the language of the subject in Mathematics,” Mr Matadigo said.
“So what I have come up with is to use the most basic iTaukei terms to teach Mathematics in the simplest way,” he said.
Mr Matadigo added that the initiative started a week ago. He said he didn’t have to get an expensive video recorder to record his tutorials on YouTube and just made use of resources that were readily available.
“It didn’t really matter to me if my tutorial videos were fancy or contained a lot of graphics because that was not the point.
“The point was getting my tutorials across to students who needed it especially during this period where everyone is studying at home.
“If you watch my videos you will note that I use examples of the most basic scenarios in Fiji to relate to their daily experiences as well.” Mr Matadigo said while his Year 12 tutorial videos are in the iTaukei language, he would soon upload Year 13 tutorial videos in the English language.
He added that he would also start uploading Chemistry and Physics tutorials in the future.
