Grog buddies save family from inferno
One of the rescuers, Semisi Nakavulevu, tells of ordeal
Afire on Friday night gutted three flats in a housing area in Nadawa, Nasinu.
It is claimed to have been started by a man who allegedly attempted to take his life and the lives of his two children.
The man’s wife was at work at the time of the incident.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed Police were investigating the situation.
When approached yesterday, the man’s mother-inlaw claimed that the fire was a deliberate act.
The unemployed man was being interviewed by Police yesterday.
15 people from the three flats are now living with their respective families and some have even started asking for assistance on social media.
Semisi Nakavulevu, 39, was at home when he heard a loud explosion. He said he and his friends were drinking grog at his home when they rushed outside to investigate the noise. Mr Nakavulevu said when they reached the flat, which was on fire, they realised people were inside one of the flats.
“When we got there, the house was already up in flames,” he said.
“The house was fenced so it was quite impossible to get to them, however we got through only to find the grill doors were locked from the inside.”
The three finally managed to get into the house, and found a man lying on the floor of the living room hugging a toddler tightly.
“The older child was in one of the other rooms in the house. We pulled them all out to safety, however, the man was unconscious at that time,” he added.
