Chaudhrys Help St Vincent de Paul Build Age Care Home in Nadi

- MERELEKI NAI Edited by Caroline Ratucadra

The Saint Vincent de Paul Nadi branch has embarked on a mission to build a senior citizens home at Field 5, Sabeto in Nadi. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Saint Vincent de Paul Age Care Home was held on Friday.

A community trade centre is also planned on the one-acre land to support the home. The birth of this project was planned after the land was donated to the Saint Vincent de Paul Nadi by businessman Avi Chaudhry.

His father, the late Francis Umendra Chaudhry, was the former national president of Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.

Saint Vincent de Paul Nadi president Flolyn Simpson said the occasion was a memorable one where they witnessed the spirit of God working in the community through Mr Chaudhry and his family.

Ms Simpson said the late Francis Chaudhry had been instrumental to the organisation, first as an ordinary member and then the national president.

“In this position he was instrumental in purchasing properties all over the country - in Suva and Labasa, and these properties are now supporting the society as we speak,” she said.

“His work has been visionary and brings a lot of hope to us today to be able to continue the work of caring for the poor and challenged in our community so they too may enjoy fulfilling lives. His generous work is now being repeated today by his son Avi Chaudhry and relatives.

“The Society is very grateful for this generous act of charity. The verse ‘it is better to give than receive’ applies here and the occasion of involving the family is also life giving and visionary. This will create a generation of God’s people in our midst, and will provide hope of the future generations.”

Mr Chaudhry said: “This is a great pleasure for my family and for me personally to be part of this event.

“My dad would be very proud of this initiative. The surrounding communities and yavusa will benefit from this home in the future too. This occasion is also important as Fiji gears up to celebrate the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.”
