Now that we are COVID-19 free, which restrictions should be eased and which ones kept?

RESIDENTS IN THE WESTERN, CENTRAL AND NORTHERN DIVISIONS GIVE US THEIR VIEWS ABOUT WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH THE RESTRICTIONS CURRENTLY IN PLACE NOW THAT THE LAST OF OUR COVID-19 PATIENTS HAS BEEN CLEARED OF THE DISEASE.

- Reporting by Mereleki Nai, Ilaijia Ravuwai, Renu Radhika and Nicolette Chambers.

Sofaia Loraini Tabu, New Town

No. I don’t think that the restrictions should not be eased and to give it sometime and give another month or two. The curfew restrictions are great, meaning everyone should be home. Usually at that time people are still out.

Saula Matairavula, Lautoka

I feel the Government should ease the curfew hours because since there are no confirmed cases, there is no chance the virus can be transmitted. The travel restrictions in terms of the closure of our borders should be kept because we still have countries who have positive cases so there are chances that the virus could be transmitted if the borders open.

Indra Wati, Labasa

I would recommend the government to give greenlight to open cinemas so people can get to mingle and enjoy their lives as before.

Curfew should be eased.

Prakash Chand, Nadi

Now that we are free of COVID-19, we need to ease some restrictions, but only the airline travel ban should be kept because people coming in the country may again bring the virus with them.

Ravu Nayago, Nasinu

Government should be cautious and give it another week or two. I mean the authorities are doing a good job. Government could ease the restrictions on social gatherings and allow people to freely meet at their places of worship.

Irene Prakash, Lautoka

I think we should keep the curfew hours because we don’t have any stealing problems now as before, however I hope Government can ease the rule on social distancing since we are now free from the virus with zero cases because it wasn’t as high as compared to the other countries.

Sonam Chand, Labasa

As we are COVID free, government should allow religious gatherings, cinemas should be opened, it can bring relief to cinema workers too. The curfew should be eased

Sisa Bevu, Nadi

Now that we are COVID-19 free, I think the first thing the Government should do is to open the schools for our children. Second, all the curfew and social gathering restrictions should be lifted. Only the airline travel restriction should remain.

Roseley Kumari Prasad, Nasinu

Government should continue to enforce restrictions that are in place. There are a lot of people who are basically unemployed and this could lead to an increase in crime rate. Curfew should remain in place indefinitely.

Semi Gilmour, Lautoka

We should keep the curfew hours so that everyone can keep still inside their homes by 10pm. I only wish the rule on social gatherings would be relaxed because we are missing out on church.

Shenal Sharma, Labasa

Government should allow religious gatherings and social gatherings with less people. The 10pm to 5am curfew should be remain in effect.

Lusi Tatabua, Nadi

I think the curfews and social gathering restriction should continue throughout the year. This would allow our young people to stay at home and manage their time well instead of roaming around at night.

Kunaseelan Sabaratnam, Suva

We should not rush into anything hastily. Safeguard Fijians first. Curfew should remain, ease up on social gatherings, allow people to meet, maybe allow the clubs to open but to close by midnight. This for at least another three to four months.

Mohammed Ibrahim Khan, Lautoka

The curfew hours should be kept because since there is a lack of jobs, the crime will go up if the curfew hours is lifted. I also think the rule on social gatherings should be kept because if parties happen, people will not know the time to go home or the number of people that should be there, but I hope the only social gathering rule that will be allowed is for people to go for prayers.

Ranjini Ranshika, Labasa

Clubs, cinemas should be opened. Curfew should also be eased. This would bring some relief to the taxi drivers and cinemas workers.

Jagdiwan Vikash, Nadi

I think the only thing that should be open is the schools; all the other restrictions should remain. We have less criminal activities due to curfew restrictions.

Jese Cawi, 42, Nadroga

I think restrictions should remain in place. It has allowed more time for our families to be together. These restrictions are a good thing.

Ilisapeci Waqabaca, Lautoka

The curfew hours should be kept because I have a son and I want him to stay home. I would like the Government to ease the rule on social gatherings especially for funerals because I have missed out on some funerals of family members.

Aysheel, Labasa

We should thank the government for their great effort as we are now COVID free.

The 10pm to 5am curfew should be remain in effect. Cinemas should be open and religious / social gatherings should be allowed with less than 50 people.

Seremaia Raseru, Nadi

Even though we are COVID-19 free, I think all restrictions should remain because we don’t know; some may have the virus but have not yet revealed themselves.
