I believe as slowly our life is returning to normal and schools are reopening the two words that should become part of our life is hyper-vigilant and super-careful.
Price hike Wise Muavono, Lautoka
In a supermarket the other day, I saw a middle aged man looking at the ranges of tin tuna displayed. Automatically I knew he must have noticed the price hike. Back from the frozen section, I saw him still standing at the exact spot. I decided to approach him and ask if all was fine.
He looked at me with teary eyes and replied, ‘Sa da vakaloloma.’ (We are so damned)

As we grapple with COVID-19, it’s critical to ensure that the nutritional needs of vulnerable school children are met. All schools must come up with a free and healthy school lunch programme for low and struggling families when school resumes.
Rather then relying on the Ministry of Education for everything, parents and individual sponsors with the assistance of a school’s Parents and Teachers Association must provide nutritional support to needy school children.
We are all aware of short-term health effects of missed meals, including fatigue and reduced immune response, which increase the risk of contracting communicable diseases.
Even brief periods of food insecurity can cause long-term developmental, psychological, physical, and emotional harm.
This initiative will ensure that students who need free lunches can be provided for. The authorities must deal with any stigma that sometimes come with receiving free meals.
Lunch for school children, I believe, will be the biggest challenge when school starts next week. Individual schools must come up with innovative ideas to support this programme so children can produce the desired academic results and be healthy and productive.
