Need for Fiji to match overseas tourism deals

- Jyoti Pratibha

Fijian hoteliers no doubt are aware of the cheap packages that are currently being offered to Australians and Kiwis from countries like Thailand. This is a reality and hoteliers in destinations like Phuket and Bali are offering extremely cheap all-inclusive deals to entice tourists to come their way.

They are also offering the buy now, travel later deals, which will guarantee them tourists when borders open.

How cheap, you ask?

Website Trippinonz.com has a wide range of specials. What would have cost a couple over $1200 in seven nights accommodation is now up for grabs for only AUD$99 (FJD$147.45). The main feature is the reduced room rates. From $1200 to $99 is a massive discount. They are doing all this without asking for reduced taxes, which they understand is a need for Governments around the world.

Another resort is offering a package which includes flights from Sydney, Australia to Phuket, Thailand.

Flight and Accommodation to Phuket, Thailand which was AUD$1,800 ($2,680.84), but is now

AUD$899 (FJD$1338.93) for seven nights. And, Aussies need to pay a deposit of $150 per person to book the deal with two years to travel and balance $749 at the time of booking.

These destinations are also offering easy payment plans.

Room type is a studio suite with accommodation including seven nights in a modern apartment on twin sharing basis.

Aussie family is offered almost the same deal for AUD$299 (FJD$445.32) in

Bali, Indonesia.

What we need to do?

Just like the new normal everywhere, our tourism industry cannot expect it will be business as usual when borders open. With people out of work for months in our traditional tourist countries, more people will be out seeking a good deal. We need to be proactive and provide these deals or we will be left behind.
