VUADREU PLANS TO REVIVE WOMEN’S CRICKET IN NADI
There are not many women who are interested in playing cricket in Fiji but they are looking to recruit and develop more young players.
These were the comments of former national rep and Nadi women’s team manager, Lanieta Vuadreu.
She said Nadi was formerly known to be a district where cricket was popular and was played in most villages including Nawaka and Nakavu. “However today, it was not a common practice,” Vuadreu said.
The Nadi team travelled from the West to be part of the Women’s T10 Bash in Suva yesterday. Vuadreu said the aim was not to win but to expose their girls to the sport.
“T10 is making it easier for us, as women’s there is not much team coming around like before,” she said.
“This is a good thing that we are to develop more young women, to experience the games, know more and play better cricket in the future. “We need to bring more women to be involved in this sport, there is not many women who likes this sport, they say it’s tough, but when they come to learn more about cricket, it is more interesting,” Vuadreu added.
Like majority of the sports in Fiji, cricket was usually male dominated.
“Majority of the men are playing cricket and we have more competitions for them. We want women too to be in the same level as men, we can also bat and do what men can do.
“What we are trying to do here is encourage these young women they can do better. We are always being taught that this is a gentleman’s game and this is where we test our attitude and how we mingle with other players,” Vuadreu added.
She was grateful to Cricket Fiji for organising the competition for women.
