Single father and taxi operator, Ashwin Lal, involves his children in his business. “Parents need to try to be involved as much as they can in their children’s lives and educate them on what to expect and how to deal with them,” Mr Lal said. “Time management is important,” he said.

Mr Lal, 43, from Vitawa, Rakiraki is a familiar face in Rakiraki.

“I have been the general secretary for the Fiji Taxi Association since 2018 and hope I have done enough for the members.

“When I started seven years ago, I saw so much that can be done for the operators to make life more comfortable.”

He wakes up every day and tries to make the most of everyday as an example to his two children.

“Working for someone else is not same when you work for yourself.

“Before buying my own taxi, I was a bus driver for Baitul Buses for 19 years.

“From that I was able to save up, I also borrowed money to buy my own taxi and be my own boss.

“I would never have been able to know what I know now if it was not for my former employer, Razak Khan.

“The biggest advantage of being my own the boss is I am able to manage my own time.

“Being a single father allows me to get up in the morning and prepare my children for school before I start my own day.”

“Parents need to try to be involved as much as they can in their children’s lives and educate them on what to expect and how to deal with them,” Mr Lal said.

A few of the projects FTA is working on includes their mobile app. The app is similar to Uber.

“We are still in the developing process. To fellow taxi operators these are trying times, please hang in there great things are yet to come.”

He urges taxi operators to always follow the code of conduct and remain polite and professional.
