Lomaiviti Netters Still Going Strong
Lomaiviti have been one of the top teams in the Super Grade division of the 2020 Suva Netball Association League season.
They are also one of the clubs that have teams in all the grades and are likely to feature in the quarterfinals this weekend.
The Lomaiviti Mixed side defeated Tagimoucia, making it to the semifinal while other grades will be in the quarterfinals.
Speaking to SUNsports, Lomaiviti Club senior official, Timaima Vulimailaucala, said despite having a slow start this season, they are happy with the team’s performance.
“Most of our girls are in the tertiary level and bringing them together was not very hard, because they got all the necessary skills,” the former national goal shooting ace said.
“I think we are nearing the final stages of the competition and it is getting tougher because all other teams are preparing for the final showdown.
“We would love to defend our title but we must not lose sight of what is before us, so we must take each game at a time,” Vulimailaucala added.
Founded 50 years ago, the club has been successfully producing national netball reps with the likes of the Vugakoto sisters in the 1980s.
Vulimailaucala and her older sister
Vasiti Vugakoto are still playing for Lomaiviti.
She indicated that the oldest player in their Golden Grade is about 65 years old.
“Well it is something that keeps us going, something that keeps us fit, wellness is something that we advocate and having to participate in netball at this age.
“It actually encourages the younger players not to lose sight of fitness and continue playing netball, until such time when your legs can’t take you anymore,” she added.
