After more than 50 years of seeking assistance, Nasolo villagers in Bua, took on the initiative to fund and build their own bridge.

Village headman, Jone Bureta, said they finally decided to take the first step after seeking for assistance for the past 58 years was unsuccessful.

The male youths in the village donated $5000 to start their self-help project.

“This was the first step that opened doors of opportunities as we build the bridge,” Mr Bureta said.

The bridge is 22 metres long, four metres wide and six metres above the ground level.

Mr Bureta said before the bridge was built, there were instances where sick people die at the village because there was no medical assistance due to the flooded river. “During flooded period, our children would miss out of school,” he said.

“The bridge would overcome most of the challenges that we use to face.

“Today we’re so happy and thankful to be able to fund this project and use the skills from our very own children to build a standard bridge.

“I believe that this was possible because everyone had helped either by monetary donation, material donation and unpaid labour, not forgetting the spiritual support through prayers,’ he added.

Mr Bureta said that nearby businessmen also helped by loading trucks of sand and providing service.

The Faith Blessed Harvet Bridge took three weeks to construct and will be officially opened by a prominent guest.

The village of Nasolo is home to more than 500 people, 100 are young men whose source of income is from planting yaqona and dalo.
