Many people are being recognised as leaders, but do not know what it takes to become one, Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) chief executive officer, Kameli Batiweti, said yesterday.

His comments followed a day long leadership coaching workshop in Suva, which was attended by 43 members of FCEF.

The purpose of the workshop was to equip people in their respective companies with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to become better leaders, Mr Batiweti said.

“The workshop will provide participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to better lead their people during these difficult times,” he said.

Representatives in attendance were identified from organisations that conducted a training needs analysis, he said.

“This training may have been identified as part of their individual development programme,” Mr Batiweti said.

Representatives are expected to return to work as more engaged employees, he said.

The programme aims to empower employees to go the extra mile to take their respective organisations out of the doldrums created by this COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Batiweti said.

“This is not a one off workshop, there will be other programmes afterthisone, assequels, tofurther strengthen the participants’ skills and knowledge,” he said.

“We want the participants to be change agents in their respective workplaces.”

The training was facilitated by Kitiana Chute, a graduate of John Maxwell’s School of Leadership.

“We have the power to master our psychology and learn the tools to help us succeed no matter what is happening externally,” Ms Chute said.

Participant, Akuila Raibevu, from Itaukei Land Trust Board, said he wanted to further develop his coaching skills.

“Through this training, I want to understand the best leadership styles that could be applied in this modern era,” Mr Raibevu said.
