Connecting The World With Data We Can Trust
Fiji Bureau of Statistics chief executive, Kemueli Naiqama, said as a statistical agency, they have come a long way.
Mr Naiqama made the comment during the World Statistics Day celebrated held in Suva yesterday.
“Today is a day celebrated throughout the world by statisticians and those who use and love statistics,” Mr Naiqama said.
This year’s theme is ‘connecting the world with data we can trust.
Mr Naiqama said they understand and would continue to uphold standards in the collation and dissemination of official statistics.
“We stand together with international agencies to celebrate this important day.
“We work together in partnership to address data gaps, and integration of data sources to capture other areas where appropriate data is lacking or under developed.”
He acknowledged United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and other international agency for their partnership in the development, gathering and dissemination of official statistics.
“This is using statistics as a tool for strengthening decision making and for development purposes.”
MICS
The Fiji Multi Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2020-2021 Publicity and Awareness Programme was also launched yesterday.
This survey will allow for the collection of so much data on women and young persons in Fiji.
Mr Naiqama said Fiji MICS 2020-2021 will be undertaken through a partnership arrangement between UNICEF, UNFPA, Ministry of Health and Fiji Bureau of Statistics.
There will be 16 teams comprising of seven officers in a team and will be going throughout Fiji to collect this important information.
The teams he said would undertake the necessary specialised training to carry out this work.
He said the data collection activity would be for six to eight weeks, taking into account the COVID19 pandemic restriction..
“Let’s continue to work hard in the collation of important data, and provide our users with meaningful statistics, which will help them connect to the rest of the world.”
